Yes, for a mortal, the life, limited though, is much of a race.

From the birth to the end, we swedge for our existence, we run, run to win a race which is not real. We vicariously through the mortal self, imagine of a luxurious life, strive to get one, get into the habit of despising and surpassing everyone. We are the runners, we take the strides, unbeknownst of our prize.
Being more into the practical world, from our very birth, we participate in this race, from the very first breath that we take into this world, we become a part, a part amongst billions of other, struggling for something which isn't even real, apparent beauty makes one neglect the inner truth. We run, we fall, our legs give way, we stop, we double back and we quit, not every runner is adherent. We run, sometimes for something, and the other times from something, mostly death. This gets gloomy, doesn't it? It's the reality, you'll realize too, someday, if souls do exist whether in head or heart, they'll pick the stimulus, the omens.
