Without their involvement all campaigns will end up hopelessly. Let’s talk about students’ role in tackling plastic menace. India, our beloved motherland is in the direst need of managing plastic pollution. The general state of our cities, towns, colonies, rivers, oceans, lakes, hill-stations, parks, gardens, public transportation systems, railway stations, public toilets, etc, all point to plastic chaos!
Plastic has become problematic! Its use in almost everything has led to such humongous piles of indecomposable waste matter that it has created real hell of debris on land and in water. The water bodies and the aquatic flora and fauna have been affected the most.
A walk along any river, lake, and beach is sufficient to know the consequences of this ubiquitous ugliness floating. According to Ocean Crusaders, an organization dedicated to fighting plastic pollution 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, plastic debris kills an estimated 100,000 marine mammals annually, as well as millions of birds and fishes. Scientists in their recent research have found plastic to be much more toxic than previously expected. Plastic is making our environment highly toxic.
Indian Government has also declared ban on single use plastic items, commencing from October 2, 2019, which is 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. As the entire nation is abuzz with Plastic Free India Campaign. We must ensure we become the real participant in this crusade against plastic. We must start SAY NO TO PLASTIC drive from our own home and surroundings. Our zeal and enthusiasm for the drive is useless, if our own home and surroundings are littered with plastic.
Students, who are so energetic and dedicated to anything they feel drawn towards, can do phenomenal work in making Plastic Free India Campaign a successful.
In order to make this campaign a real success, students should make monitoring committees consisting of some prefects in every class. They should not let any student use and throw single use plastic articles throw either in the class or anywhere else in the school campus. These committees should work in coordination with teachers, vice-principal, and the principal.
Secondly, they can make groups and go to those colonies where plots are being used as dumping grounds and reason with people. They can form teams and carrying posters depicting negative effects of single use plastic articles on the people living in the surroundings and general environment, they can hold seminars or street plays to sensitize people to myriad health related problems caused by plastic articles.
In conclusion we can say India has immense youth power to accomplish anything significant. All our nation is missing is channeling of this power.
