Conversion of ethane to ethyne involves following steps

Step-1:—Conversion of ethane into ethyl chloride.

When ethane is heated with chlorine, ethyl chloride is obtained.

Step-2:—Dehydrohalogenation of ethyl chloride.

When ethyl chloride is heated with alcoholic KOH,dehydrohalogenation takes place to give ethylene.

Step-3:—Addition of chlorine on ethylene.

When ethylene is reacted with chlorine in presence of ferric chloride, addition takes place to give ethylene dichloride.

Step-4:—Dehydrohalogenation of ethylene dichloride.

When ethylene dichloride is boiled with alcoholic KOH,vinyl chloride is obtained in first step.Vinyl chloride is further heated with sodamide to form acetylene (ethyne)
