Conversion of benzene to m-nitrophenol

  1. The benzene must be treated with sulfuric acid (H_2SO_4)and nitric acid (HNO_3.
  2. Due to nitrification, the reaction yields nitro benzene which on reaction with aluminium chloride (AlCl_3) yields an intermediate compound.
  3. When the intermediate compound is treated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) it leads to the formation of m-nitrophenol.
  4. The equation involved in conversion is given in the attachment.
