Answer:

Phenol can be converted into salicylaldehyde by Reimer-Tiemann reaction. In this reaction phenol is treated with chloroform and aq. NaOH to form an intermediate, which on hydrolysis followed by acidification gives salicylaldehyde.

The phenol into salicylicaldhyde

Explanation:

Phenol

It has molecular formula C₆H₅OH

Conversion of phenol to Salicylic aldehyde

There is a special name given to it : Reimer Tieman reaction

In this phenol reacts with chloroform in presence of sodium hydroxide at temperature 340K to form an intermediate .

This intermediate further reacts with sodium hydroxide , followed by loss of water molecule .

This give rise to another intermediate that reacts with HCl and leads to formation of Salicylicaldehyde  .
