convert sodium ethanoate to ethane..?
Answers
hope it helps
1.Sodium acetate can be converted in to ethane by Kolbe's electrolysis. In this ,sodium acetate is electrolysed .At anode acetate ions decompose to form methyl free radical which in turn combine with another methyl free radical to give ethane.
2.At cathode water gains electron and undergoes reduction and lead to the liberation of hydrogen gas.
3.Kolbe's electrolysis method is a general method of preparation of substituted hydrocarbons from the substituted carboxylic acids by the use of the electric discharge method where carbon dioxide gas is released.
4. It is one of the most widely used methods for the preparation of alkanes and substituted hydrocarbons.
Explanation:
1.CH3COONa → CH3COOH (by hydrolysis)
2.CH3COOH →CH3CH2OH ( in the presence of LiAlH4 )
3.CH3CH2OH → CH3CH2CN (by using alcoholic KCN )
4.CH3CH2CN → CH3CH2COOH (hydrolysis )
5.CH3CH2COOH → CH3CH3 (ETHANE) (by electrolysis).
