Indirect/Reported speech refers to speech being said to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: She said,"I'm going for a picnic tomorrow." (Direct)

She said that she was going for a picnic the next day. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense form. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'this' changes to 'that', 'will' changes to 'would', 'you' changes to 'I' and many other words will have to be made.

Tina: "Father, why can't we go for holiday this winter?" (Direct)

Tina asked her father why they couldn't go for holiday that winter. (Indirect)

Hope it helps :)
