There were 3 estates in the French society :
1st estate: The first estate consisted of the clergy (the church). They enjoyed many privileges - most important was the exemption from taxes. They also took taxes known as " tithes " from the peasants which was an addition to the direct taxes from the states "taille".
2nd estate: The second estate consisted of the nobility. They too were given privileges by birth. They didn't pay taxes to the state and they further enjoyed feudal privileges. These included feudal dues , which they extracted from the peasants.
3rd estate: Finally the estate that suffered the most , was the third estate. It consisted from big businessmen, merchants, court official, lawyers etc. to peasants , artisans, small workers, landless labourers and servants . They paid all the taxes . They were only obliged to serve the lord , work on their fields and take part in the army etc. But there was an advantage for the richer section of the third estate ( businessmen , merchants etc.) that they owned land .
