Due to their velocity and also due to the gravitational energy of sun attracts them to rotate around it in elliptical orbit.

Because there is a nearly perfect balance between two forces: the gravity between sun and planet on the one hand and the planet's movement past the sun on the other. The distance the planet is pulled towards the sun by gravity is as large as the distance it moves away from the sun by moving past it in a given period of time. This leads to the two forces cancelling each other out, at least when it comes to determining the distance between the two object. The result is the planet revolving around the sun at roughly the same distance.
