Lemon contains acid in it which has corrosive property. But that is weak.
Copper and brass are cleaned with this lemon so that the acid present in the lemon could tarnish the first layer of dull copper or brass.

Copper oxide is usually basic in nature. Thus when we rub tarnished copper vessel with aid of tamarind or lemon juice, the copper oxide seems to react with the citric acid found in tamarind or lemon to create a salt which is washed away easily with aid of water.
