Nitric acid (HNO3) is reduced to nitric oxide (NO) when cold, dilute acid is reacted with the metal. The acid is reduced to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) when it is hot and concentrated. Nitric acid is a powerful oxidizing agent. A metal-nitric acid reaction is always a redox reaction in which the metal acts as the reductant.
