A thief/robber/burglar breaks into the Bishop's house and is welcomed whole heartedly and warmed. The benevolence of the Bishop somewhat melts the heart of the convict, but, when he sees the silver candlesticks, he feels he can earn some money by selling it and hence steals/robs them, and runs away.
