The most common cause of coral bleaching is above-average temperature of sea water.

Warm sea water, causes corals to discharge the algae called zooxanthellae, which live in their tissues. These algae, give corals their pigmentation and in their absence, the coral turns completely white.

The increase in temperature of sea water in recent times, is mainly due to global warming and polluted water run-offs into the sea.
