It's always not neccecary to smell a has evolved during a reaction but when it is necessary to smell chemical gas in the lab, the proper technique is to cup your hand above the container and waft the air toward your face, and don't take up the maximum amount of gas because some times harmful gases are injurious for our mucuos membranes of our lungs.
