Ferrous Sulphate is iron (ii) Sulphate.

It contains Fe²⁺

When Ammonium hydroxide is added to ferrous Sulphate a green precipitate of Fe(OH) ₂ is formed.

The equation is as indicated below.

FeSO₄ (aq) + 2 NH₄OH (aq) —> (NH₄)₂SO₄ (aq) + Fe(OH)₂ (s)

However when Ammonium hydroxide is added to Fe³⁺ a reddish brown precipitate is formed.

This precipitate is :

Fe(OH)₃
