Correct the following sentence and state your resons for so doing.

3. Mr Smith, with his wife and children, live next door.

1. He, with his father, WAS among the first to arrive----we are talking about him and his father is just with him. He is the main subject here

2.Their lives, their liberties and their religion ARE in danger----we are talking about lives, liberties and religion therefore making it plural.

3.Mr.Smith, with his wife and children, live next door. ----same explanation as 1st one

4.The fleet IS under orders to sail----the subject fleet here is a collective noun which means it is one single group. therefore IS is used and not ARE

5. Fifty miles IS a long distance---- IS is used for counting measures like kilometers, miles, Kilogramas, litres etc.

6.The books borrowed from the library ARE on the table---- books is the subject here, not library. books is plural.

7.The boss, as well as his colleagues, HAS been robbed----same explanation as 1sta nd 3rd

10.The quality of the books IS poor----we are talking about the quality and the books themselves.
