It ranges from 0 to 14 . < 7 indicates acidic nature , and  > 7 is basic (as the opposite of the acid is base ) . It is a measurement of free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in the water . When water has more free hydrogen ions it is acidic , whereas water has more hydroxyl ions it is basic . Pure water is neutral but when the chemicals are mixed with water , the mixture can become acidic or basic . The example for acidic solution is lemon juice or vinegar and the examples for basic is milk of magnesia and ammonia .
