Your statement has to be corrected. The correct proverb is Prevention is better than cure. Here's a short story to make this topic clear :

Once upon a time, there was a poor family living in Palampur. Mother of two sons would work hard but she'd be paid less because she's a women. The sons were feeling sad and hence they decided to work instead of their mother getting strained. They were paid normally.

Once their son got a disease which was spreadable. The doctor advised them to stay away from the kid but their family denied, as they all loved him so much. Soon everyone got infected to that disease. And soon they all passed away except the brother of that kid.

He lived a lonely life ever after, he missed his family so much. He thought that it'd be better if they all listened to the doctor that day. Think what'd have happened if they all followed the doctor's suggestion? Everyone would be alive now. Hence this story proves that prevention is better than cure. Preventing that child would be better than curing the disease which attacked everyone.

There are many more example to prove this proverb.

  • If one learned many bad habits, it's really hard for him or her to forget all those and be good. Preventing him or her to learn many bad habits would be really better from curing them to be good.

  • It is better to prevent diseases entering your body, rather than fighting for treatment after you're affected.

  • It is better to avoid smoking rather than taking treatments to try to quit smoking.
