For the following trick to work, Let us first follow it by using variables.
Step 1 : Write down your age.
Let us assume our age to be x years.
Step 2 : Multiply it by 1/5 of 100
⇒ x × 1/5 × 100
⇒ x × 20
⇒ 20x
Step 3 : Add on today's date (Day of the month)
Let us assume that the day of the month to be y.
⇒ 20x + y
Step 4 : Multiply by 20% of 25
First, Let us find 20% of 25.
⇒ 20/100 × 25
⇒ 1/5 × 25
⇒ 5
Adding it to the number obtained in previous step.
⇒ (20x + y)5
⇒ 100x + 5y
Step 5 : Add your shoe size
Let it be z
⇒ 100x + 5y + z
Step 6 : Subtract 5 times today's date.
⇒ 20x + y + 5 + z - 5y
⇒ 100x + 5y + z - 5y
⇒ 100x + z ...(1)
Let us take an example:
Where,
- Age assumed, x = 10
- Today's date, y = 12
- Shoe size, z = 7
But we don't have the variable y in (1) that means our trick doesn't depend upon the date.
Substituting these values in (1), we have
⇒ 100×10 + 7
⇒ 1000 + 7
⇒ 1007
Here, The age we took can clearly be seen which is 10 and the shoe size which is 7.
Let us take the formula 100x + z
⇒ 100x + z
⇒ 10(10x + z/10 )
Here, 10x + z/10 is in the form of a two digit number and Let it be equal to r
⇒ 10r [ r = 10x + z/10 ]
Whatever number we form by the combination of x & z , It would be multiplied by 10.
r = 10×1 + z
⇒ r = 10 + z
Let z = 0,
⇒ r = 10 + 0
⇒ r = 10
r = 10 × 0 + z
⇒ r = 0 + z
Let z = 1,
⇒ r = 0 + 1/10
⇒ r = 0.1
Which means 0 age, and 1 shoe size.
The trick works because it is an algorithm and would work for all values.
