very small - point charges

Coulomb's law is only applicable on point charges because

  • it is used to find electrical attraction between charges and in the formula, the distance between them is also used. So if the charges are large then their body dimensions will also be needed to be add-in the formula but coulomb's law consider dimensions of the body negligible.
  • Another reason is that when two bodies having a considerable size and dimensions carrying a charge are bought together then the induced charge is not uniform, that is why coulomb's law is not applicable there.

Therefore, Coulomb's law is only true for point charges whose sizes are very small.
