Aihole is the cradle of Indian temple architecture.
Aihole is located in north Karnataka, India. There are over 150 temples scattered around the village. The Lad Khan temple is the oldest. The Durga temple is notable for its semicircular apse, elevated plinth and the gallery that encircles the sanctum sanctorum. Aihole is 35 km form Badami and 10 km from Pattadakal, both of which are of historic importance. It was the capital city of Karnataka region during the rule of Calukyas. The city was very prosperous and powerful between 6th and 8th century CE. In 634 CE, the Jain Meguti temple is first built in Aihole. Aihole is also one of the walled cities from Ancient India. It has a mix of architectural styles. There was nothing much redesigned or rebuilt later. So, it provides a great information of the evolution of the Indian architecture.
