Let us consider that number of wins be x

Then, number of loses be (x - 3)

Total matches = x + (x - 3) = 2x - 3

For winning, they got (x * 2) = 2x points

For loses, then got {(x - 3) * (- 1)}

= (- x + 3) points

So, total points be

= 2x + (- x + 3)

= 2x - x + 3

= x + 3

By the given condition,

x + 3 = 23

==> x = 23 - 3

==> x = 20

So, total number of matches played

= 2x - 3

= 2 (20) - 3

= 40 - 3

= 37
