carbon has 4 valence electrons so it can loose or gain 4 more electrons to obtain octet configaration and become stable but loosing electrons and gaining takes more energy so it takes easy to share electrons so carbons valency is C (-4) and w. k. t. H valency is H(+1) ,,,, it shares its electrons with 4 hydrogen atoms of valency +1
