1 . Solvent should have good dissolving power.
2. It should not contain any impurities.
3. A good solvent should not itself absorb radiation in region under investigation.
4. It should be less polar so that it has minimum interaction with solute molecules.
Ex. solvents in NMR : 1. CCl4, 2.D2O, 3. CDCl3 ( Both solid and liquid solvents are used) .
Solvents used in IR : 1 CCl4 , 2. CS2
Solvents used in UV : Ethanol, chloroform, benzene, CCl4.
