GUWAHATI: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh has taken a massive lead in the panchayat and civic polls. A large number of its candidates have been declared unopposed winners at the end of the time for withdrawal of nomination on Monday.
The election to the two-tier panchayat system and two urban bodies—Itanagar Municipal Corporation and Pasighat Municipal Council—will be held on December 22 after a delay of almost two years. The elections were earlier scheduled in April this year, but were postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The counting of votes will take place on December 26.
State Election Commission (SEC) deputy secretary Habung Lampung said that in many areas, candidates have been declared winners unopposed after their opponents withdrew their nomination papers and in some there were just one nomination.
