There was a time when there were no screens, no Kindle, and no audibles. Reading was a popular leisure activity. People would spend hours reading and traveling to distant exotic lands - in their minds, with only a paperback or a leather bound book. But somewhere along the road, the passion for reading is lost which is a sad occurrence as reading offers a completely new life. Sir Francis Bacon once wrote, "Reading maketh a full man" which was not without a reason.
A person who reads more definitely has a good command of vocabulary. He/She can easily convey his emotions and thoughts in a simple and effective manner leading to more clarity and no confusion. But, is reading limited to the confines of vocabulary and meaning? Of course NOT. Reading enables not only comprehending what is written in black and white but it also dawns the reader with the ability to reason out, compare and contrast between various facts available. One can juxtapose the past with the present and find the relevance of a text during contemporary times. When Bacon used the phrase 'full man' he obviously hints at the process that goes on in the mind of the reader analyzing the text.
Reading which is done in educational institutions is only the basic one which results in gaining knowledge. Reading for pleasure and time pass is conducted as a real companionship of books that brings for the reader myriads of experiences. A full man is that one who has a mind filled with superb ideas and also stocked with useful knowledge. One gets new ideas, thoughts and wider horizon by means of living the experience in our mind. Anyone who wants to be a full man must keep on reading in life.
