Reading can be developed by making the child to read a story book.  Initially, the parent/teacher can read and ask the child to repeat.  Later, make the child to read the same part loudly and individually

Limitation: If you allow the child to listen first and then read, the child will learn blind reading that is reading from the mind by not seeing the word.

2) This can be practised for higher classes. Take a story; write all the new words and its meaning on the board. Ask one or two children to read the words on the board and then, encourage silent reading.  After sometime, you can ask one or two children to narrate the story.

Limitation: Not all the children will make sincere effort in reading. The advantage is, we would have atleast made them to learn few words.

Two approaches can be adopted to develop reading skills among children.

In this the child reads repeatedly. He reads the text again and again till he can read it in a fluent manner. He can read something which he likes and is familiar with. The teacher can set a reachable goal for example 85 words per minute. In a class the students can be divided into pairs of readers who respond to each other. They can read in turns and evaluate each other’s speed and fluency.

Advantage – There is active participation. The students can learn to read aloud fluently.

Disadvantage – May become boring. It may not teach them new words as it is restricted to a certain piece.

Indirect approach

In this all the students choose their favourite books or magazines and read for a fixed time every day. Students share their reactions to books with their classmates in peer discussion groups. This helps to develop positive attitudes towards reading.

Advantage – It gives the child a chance to discover the pleasure of reading.

Disadvantage – All the students may not attain the same level of fluency.
