Critics poem by jonathan swift summary
Answers
Critics poem is a satire by Jonathan Swift on the poets who were lowli in taste and criticised the works of others.
EXPLANATION:
Critics is a poem of satire. Like Alexander Pope’s ‘An Epistle to Doctor Arbuthnot’ and John Dryden’s ‘MacFlecknoe’, it ironically mocks all those poets and critics who criticise the work of higher poets in spite of the fact that their own quality of writing is very poor.
Swift begins the poem by citing examples from the animal kingdom where beasts have a tendency to devour all the creatures gentler than them. Swift then compares these beasts to all the poetasters who keep criticising the works of all the great poets. They try to find all kinds of faults be it in rhyming or the rhetorics to establish the fact that the poems are of poor quality. Through ‘Critics’ Swift ironically mocks these poets.
