Lord Curzon, who was the Viceroy of India from 1898 to 1905, became disliked in India.  He attempted to promote the administration of Bengal by illustrating that Bengal was extremely large as a province to be administrated by a single Governor. In 1905 the British governor-general, Lord George Curzon, divided Bengal into eastern and western divisions in order to promote administrative control of the enormous and populous region. Curzon also installed a new township which was designated as East Bengal and Assam, which had its center at Dhaka.
