Cyberspace and Internet: Blessing or curse to the human civilization in the long run
Cyberspace is a phenomenon which has evolved out of computers, digitization, and IT revolution. We are living in an IT revolution era. Indispensability of internet and computers cannot be denied. The ever expanding of network of computers, internet and other technologies have evolved into a new phenomenon called cyberspace. Cyberspace, according to Oxford Dictionary is ‘The notional environment in which communication over computer networks occurs.’
With the emergence of cyberspace, its boons and banes have also come into existence. If it has brought along infinite uses, the delinquent and criminal-minded people have found out new ways to misuse cyberspace.
Internet has become ubiquitous owing to its versatility. What is it not that you can't do with internet? It is the god of the modern era! Almost everything is connected to cyberspace. Everything is available on internet and social networking sites and platforms. There is not a single sphere or walk of life where social networking and media are not being used! Education, industry, finance, defense, teaching, learning, research, medicine, accounting, entertainment, internet, online teaching, telecommunication, media, and space research and exploration.
Internet and computers have created such an order in every field. They are so adroitly efficient in data storing and handling. They have made man's life much more organized, systematic, simple, colourful, and awesomely efficient. Experts and skilled personnel in all spheres are using this cyberspace. From ticket booking to e-banking; from online shopping to e-learning; from working online to receiving emoluments for the work done online; from receiving your medical diagnosis reports to paying your income tax online, almost everything is being done in this cyberspace.
However, this ease of doing work provided by cyberspace has also posed serious threats to an individual’s personal safety and security. Cybercrime incidents are on the increase. Hacking, counterfeit calls, online frauds, etc. have become everyday affairs.
Uncontrolled and unregulated use of internet and computers has exposed young men and women to unwanted dangers. Children sitting in front of computer screens for hours watching inappropriate sites and programmes, playing violent video games without any purpose can adversely influence their impressionable minds. This not only wastes the most precious commodity in the world—TIME, but also is unproductive in many ways such as affecting their physical and mental health. Sitting purposely in front of computers may make children couch potatoes leading to health issues that further affect their other areas of life.
Since cyberspace is going to be more prevalent in future, and its use is going to increase more in every sphere of life, people should adopt it in their life with caution and responsibility.
The need of the hour is to take precautions and cautions in the use of this cyberspace. The Government must provide potent foolproof safety measures so that there is no misuse of this wonderful cyberspace.
