Hoping that you know about diffraction….,
I'll try to explain this with an example….
Imagine you in an room completely covered with walls and only 1 window.
Next to your room, stays a pretty lady with very sweet voice. When she sings a song, you won't be able to listen to her if you have closed the window of your room. But when you open the window, you'll be able to hear her with ease.
Why does this happen?- this happens because of diffraction. Yes , diffraction does play a major role here.
As per the definition of diffraction, obstacles of sizes comparable to the wavelength of sound can make sound change its direction and make it encroach into the region where sound can not enter as per it's direction.
Similarly, here the edge of the window ( attached to your neighbour' window side by side.)acts as an obstacle to the sound waves of the lady's voice and makes it to enter into your room only if you let the window open. Or else you won't be able to listen to her voice.
