Acetyl cysteine is the specific antidote for Acetaminophen (Paracetamol).
- It's is often seen that Paracetamol overdose results in its toxicity in various organs.
- The organs mainly involved are kidney and liver.
- Metabolism of paracetamol produces a metabolite named NAPQ1 (N-amino P-benzo quinoneimine 1) , which covalently links with proteins and cause necrosis of hepatic or renal parenchyma.
- So, acetyl-cysteine is added as an antidote.
- It produces Sulfhydryl Group (-SH), which causes proper metabolism of paracetamol.
- It also replenishes the glutathione stores of the liver and prevents cell necrosis.
