Acetyl cysteine is the specific antidote for Acetaminophen (Paracetamol).

  • It's is often seen that Paracetamol overdose results in its toxicity in various organs.

  • The organs mainly involved are kidney and liver.

  • Metabolism of paracetamol produces a metabolite named NAPQ1 (N-amino P-benzo quinoneimine 1) , which covalently links with proteins and cause necrosis of hepatic or renal parenchyma.

  • So, acetyl-cysteine is added as an antidote.

  • It produces Sulfhydryl Group (-SH), which causes proper metabolism of paracetamol.

  • It also replenishes the glutathione stores of the liver and prevents cell necrosis.

  • The other substances used in Acetaminophen toxicity is Activated Charcoal to prevent absorption of the drug.

  • Hemodialysis also has effective use.
