Answer:

According to the railway police, the robbers boarded the general bogie of the train as it reached Satara railway station around 1.30 am. Between Vatar and Saswad, they beat up a few passengers and robbed valuables at knife-point. The robbers pulled the chain at Saswad, jumped off the train and fled around 3.15 am.

There were three Railway Protection Force (RPF) guards in the second-class compartment of the train. But they came to know of the incident after the robbers fled. The passengers called police control room at Saswad for help.

Later, around 13 passengers, all hailing from north India, approached the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Pune railway station. A victim identified as Hakim Habib Ansari (36) of Uttar Pradesh lodged the first information report (FIR) in the case.

Police said the robbers had looted cash amounting to 1,05,850 from 13 passengers. The case was later transferred to GRP,Miraj as the robbery began in their jurisdiction. Police recorded the statements of the victims, but none of them could stay back in Pune for further investigation and boarded the north-bound train. Thus the railway police could not make the sketch of any suspect.

Primary investigation revealed that robbers spoke to the passengers in Hindi, but within themselves they were speaking in Marathi. Also, none of them had covered their faces. Railway police suspect the involvement of local youths in the robbery. Inspector Mahendra Rokde is investigating the case

A group of seven to eight armed youths had in similar fashion robbed about 20 passengers on Jodhpur-Pune Express between Lonavala and Chinchwad in the early hours of Wednesday. Investigation is on to find if the same group was involved in both the incidents.

First aid at station

Railway officials said over a dozen people who were beaten up by the robbers in the Goa-Nizamuddin Express were provided first aid at the Pune station.

“The arrival time of the train is 3.45 am but on Friday it reached around 4.00 am. There were many injured people who were not willing to come down for treatment. So our doctor went inside the bogies and provided first aid to the injured passengers,” said Sunil Kamtan, station manager,Pune station.

Kamtan said railways arranged for breakfast and lunch for the victims since most of them were robbed of all the cash they had with them. The train left Pune station at 5.15 am,delayed by an hour of its scheduled departure timing.

Harsha Shah of Railway Pravasi group said the incident highlights lack of security on trains. “If the GRP doesn’t have enough personnel to deploy men on each train during night,it should immediately recruit people. We can’t leave our passengers at the mercy of robbers. A better co-ordination between GRP and RPF is also needed,” said Shah.

Situation alarming, security stepped up,says GRP SP

Superintendent of Government Railway Police (GRP),Pune,Pratapsinh Patankar admitted that the situation was alarming,in the view of robbery in Goa Express. “We have decided to step up security in trains in our jurisdiction. There are about 170 trains travelling through Pune district daily. We provide armed GRP guards to 28 trains travelling during night. Now,we would be deploying armed guards in 50 trains. We will transfer some of our staff from offices to trains. We have also asked the railway police staff to keep a check on general compartments,” said Patankar.

“There have been incidents of railway robbery and dacoity in Daund,Kurduwadi,Jinti and Solapur area. But there were hardly any incidents between Miraj-Pune route as it was considered a safe route. One GRP jawan was present in the Goa Express between Miraj and Satara. Now,we would deploy GRP from Miraj to Pune,” Patankar said.

As per the figures obtained from GRP,Pune, between January and June 2011,as many as four train dacoity and two robbery incidents had taken place. During the same period in 2012,three dacoity and 11 robbery cases were reported. In July 2012,one dacoity and two robbery cases were reported.

As many as 181 thefts in trains were reported at GRP,Pune, between January and June 2011. And 198 thefts were reported between January and June 2012. Number of chain snatching incidents in trains has also increased. There were 31 chain snatching cases between January and June 2011. The number went up to 43 in 2012,Patankar said, adding that overall detection rate in 2011 was 23 per cent, while in 2012 it was 22 per cent.

GRP is also working on improving coordination between RPF and Pune city and rural police for controlling crimes in trains.
