Any species growing exponentially under unlimited resource conditions can reach enormous population density in a short time. If we do not check the resources and they become unlimited , then as Darwin said a slow growing elephant could also reach an enormous population if the resources supplied are unlimited for its growth in its habitat.

The given situation is possible if Exponential  growth model is followed. However, It is an unrealistic situation because resources are limited. Hence, the growth will follow logistic growth model.

Explanation:

There are two growth models :

1. Logistic growth model - according to this model in a given ecosystem the population of any given species would only grow up to a certain limit and would then slow down and reach a plateau. This is because in an y given environment the resources are not unlimited and hence, this limits the growth of the population.

2. Exponential model - according to this model, when there are unlimited resource available the number of individuals of a population would increase exponentially.

Now, in the absence of checks where there is availability of unlimited resources even a slow-growing elephant can reach enormous number however in reality, the resources are limited in nature and hence, elephants will follow logistic growth model.
