Data redundancy increases the cost of storing and retrieving data

Data which cannot be used by programs or data that is already available in another easily accessible format may be classified as ‘redundant data’.

Storage of such data is expensive as it eats into storage space, which could have otherwise been used to store useful data. Retrieval of data by computer programs takes a much longer time as it has to read through all the redundant data before it can pick out the useful and current data.
