The Prime Minister is elected directly in India by the people whereas the President is elected by the members of the electoral college indirectly..Hence real power is in the hands of the Prime Minister.. In a parliamentary democracy, generally the leader of the majority party becomes the Prime Minister but in certain cases as when no party emerges in majority, a member from the lok sabha is made the Prime Minister after consultation with other parties and through simple votes..
