odd-even traffic rule is the only way to reduce pollution in metros. i am against this motion as there are other more effective methods to tackle the increasing pollution in metropolitan cities.

for those who live with their heads in a hole, here is a brief summary on odd even rule. it is quite simple, only vehicles with odd number on number plate will be allowed on roads on odd days and the ones with even number on even days, with few exceptions of course. vehicular emission isn't a major cause for environmental pollution as most public transport and many private vehicles use CNG. also, mandatory pollution control of vehicles helps to keep in check the expulsion of harmful gases. burning waste and farm waste, residential fuel burning, construction and industries cause much more harmful gas emissions than vehicles. putting curb on these activities or by setting emission limit for them is a considerably better and truly effective option to control air quality. here are some facts to prove odd even rule isnt the only solution.

research based on nasa satellite data from december 2013 revealed that coal fired power sector was responsible for half of  India's sulphur dioxide emissions. cpcb-neeri's 2008 study in Delhi revealed that road dust was responsible for more than half (52.5%) particle emission in air, while 6.6% was due to vehicular emissions. there are numerous similar facts and figures to prove other air pollution causes are much more harmful than vehicular pollution and need urgent attention.

odd-even traffic rule has it's pros, it reduces traffic and jams on road, improves air quality no doubt, but at the same time it causes considerable stress on public transport  and common man's pocket and is not as effective as banning waste burning, keeping a check on industries etc would be. the 15 days it was in effect in Delhi undoubtedly brought down carbon and gas emissions, but they escalated once again after it stopped. odd-even is definitely not a long term solution to improve air quality in metros.

we need a comprehensive approach that doesn't only depend on banning vehicles. to be more effective in long term ,it should be an amalgamation of ways to decrease emission from all pollution causes instead of focusing on just one.
