                                  Traditions and Culture

Good morning everyone present; I am going to speak in favor of Indian traditions and culture. I am going to speak in favor of it. Indian traditions and culture are one of the best civilizations on the planet.

Culture and traditions were actually made for the convenience of the people in the long past by the then wise people. Traditions are our past. Our joys are associated with the traditions. For example all the festivals that we love celebrating are nothing but traditions. They are an integral part of our society. For example, take any tradition and analyze it; you will find it has many wholesome benefits. For example, take the tradition of going to a temple/mosque/church/or any religious place. It connects us to our roots. As we go to the temple, it makes us realize the supremacy of God; it makes us spiritual.

Another example is being respectful to elders. Our traditions teaches us to be courteous and respectful to our elders, teachers, or any stranger; by being respectful we not only gladden the elders, but also gladden ourselves. They give us many favours in return. For example, they bless us. They teach us. They are always there with their love and care when we need them. We also earn a good image in society and people like to be associated with us.

Another blessing of our family is joint family system. This system is only found in India and some other traditional societies. The so called problem-ridden western societies don’t have joint family systems. As a result, there are no problems such as loneliness, depression, going astray, etc.; by default, the joint family system proves healthy and beneficial in the healthy growth of children and provides them with a wholesome environment.

So, we must protect and observe the traditions bequeathed to us by our wise forefathers. We can modify certain traditions for the convenience of people as well as according to the demands of current times. We must never ever disrespect and disregard traditions, for they are for our help, comfort, ease, and happiness.

Following are the points that prove oriental culture’s edge over western culture:

1. Our culture basically is spiritual culture. We give first priority to God, Faith, and His divine Will. But western culture on the other hand is based on scientific outlook. We have an inborn acceptance of God’s omnipresence, omniscience, and omnipotence. The western culture looks for a cause.

2. Traditional rituals and ceremonies bind human relationships in our culture; our culture teaches us to be patient, loyal, and responsible in maintaining and honouring relationships. But in western culture this responsibility and loyalty is missing.

3. Joint family system. (positive points mentioned in the article)

4. In our culture, there are many opportunities for socialization. Festivals, social gatherings, etc. people love to interact with their relatives, friends, etc. but in western culture such socialization is absolutely missing.

5.  Indian culture is quite colurful with so many fun-filled festivals. Throughout the year, there is an atmosphere of celebrations. There is no month that is without some festival. So we remain busy and cheerful all around the year. However, the western culture is not lucky enough to have so many festivals.

6. Our culture is upheld by ethics and morals. However, morality and ethics are missing, especially in relationships.

7. Our culture is full of humane elements such as fellow-feelings, sympathy, empathy, etc. on the other hand western culture is mechanical, callous, and harsh. People just mind their own business. They are engrossed in their own affairs. Even the neighbours live like strangers.

8. Our culture encourages us to eat home- made, healthy food. But the western culture owing to fast pace of life, depends on fast-food, which in return leads to many ailments.

9. In our culture, the elderly usually live in the company of their grandsons, granddaughters, and other family members. They don’t have time to get lonely. On the contrary, the elderly live lonely, depressed and forlorn life in the western culture. They die alone in the abandoned loneliness and stillness of their family-less life.

So, we must preserve our rich and beneficial culture and be proud of it.
