A controversy usually involves extremely different opinions and heated talks and discussions. Also, it is not a term that is generally applied to a low-key dispute. Thus, it can safely be said that a controversy enjoys a fair deal of publicity.

Agree with the statement:

As already pointed out, controversies get a lot of publicity, because the audience (in case of electronic media) and readers (of the print media) in general, look for gossip. The reporters work on exaggerating the headlines to maintain their readership. Thus, an event or perspective reaches a multitude of people, is talked about on social networks and eventually, everyone knows about the people involved in the controversy. They become a topic in themselves, as did Poonam Pandey, a model, who got ample attention from the media after her controversial offer to the Indian cricket team.

Further, as a person becomes known, the chances of landing a good job or offer increase considerably. Marketing executives often play on the ‘scandalous’ quotient to gain more. The TV show Big Boss is a good example. Each season invariably witnesses at least a few participants with a scandalous track record. This is done on purpose, because humans are inquisitive about controversial people, who are often portrayed as daredevils.

Disagree with the statement:

The fact that word about controversies spreads like wild fire, often ruins the prospects of achieving stardom. There have been many instances when an individual who has the potential to attain stardom has found himself in a controversy, which in turn sends his hopes crashing to the ground. The latest person to be in this situation is the Rio aspirant Narsingh Yadav, who tested positive in the dope test, due to which he cannot even participate in the games. The controversy undid his plans and shattered his dreams, besides making many Indians feel disillusioned.

There are many others who suffer because they find themselves embroiled in controversy.  IAS officer Ashok Khemka, took a stand against the malpractices of the functioning of the governmental machinery. With sufficient public support, he could have catapulted into fame. However, he found himself cornered by the bureaucracy, which left no stone unturned to punish an honest officer.

Whether landing in a controversy guarantees an individual instant stardom or unleashes a storm of troubles, continues to be a matter of debate.
