His father took him to California at the beginning of the story. He goes to the shore, where a wave surges over him and knocks him down. Although the father laughs at this, knowing there was no risk, it terrifies the author. But because of this, he becomes terrified of the water. But the dread he feels as he drowns never leaves him. It has followed him for many years and even ruined his future kayaking, swimming, fishing, and other adventures.

He even travels to places like Marine Lakes, Columbia, New Hampshire, and more, but he is unable to take pleasure in it. He makes the decision to do whatever it takes to get over this phobia. He registers himself for a swimming lesson and tries to pick up tips from the teacher. He learns a lot of swimming tips and tactics from the instructor. He starts by practising the inhaling and exhaling portion for several weeks.

He then continues by kicking his legs against the pool's edge. He then mixes all of this with the swimming manoeuvre.
