Answer:

Defense and Happiness of Married Life” by Joseph Addison

With my new found obsession with the movie Pride and Prejudice, I found the language of Joseph Addison’s, “Defense and Happiness of Married Life”, to be refreshing. However, his essay paints an outdated picture of a controlling husband, as to a family unit. For example, he writes, “I look upon my Family as a Patriarchal Sovereignty, in which I am my self both King and Priest.” This displays his egotistical ideals that, unfortunately at the time it was written, were widely acknowledged and accepted. He is portraying his household as a monarchy in which he is the king, much like the government in England to which he referred. Even though he appears controlling, he displays compassion for his family and looks toward the future of his children’s success. While reviewing some of the other blogs, I noticed that some people were confused with the purpose of the words with initial capitals. He infuses imagery by highlighting select words with initial capital letters. In this way he was able to flash visual pictures of his message throughout the text much like a modern day bullet point presentation. For me, the whole letter was written for the unmarried man. He appeared to be attacking the single men by coming to the defense of marriage much like the chivalry of his day.
