As warm air rises, it cools down by adiabatic effect of a lesser pressure aloft and, once reaching dew point, moisture condenses, creating tiny droplets of water we call, the clouds.

But the process of condensation releases latent heat energy that keeps the air buoyant and rising. As it does, the droplets get bigger and bigger and, when big enough to overcome the convection (rising) by gravity, it comes down as rain … or snow.

Sometimes the air is so unstable that the rain keeps rising to the top of the troposphere, just under the stratosphere. The water droplets get huge and end up by freezing. When it finally comes down, it is as hail!

Continuous condensation causes the droplets in the clouds to grow in size. Being unable to resist the gravitational force of the earth , the water droplets get released from the clouds and fall on the earth in different forms. This process is called Precipitation. The common manifestation of precipitation is in the form of water drops. This is called rainfall.
