When a force of 1 Newton move the body through a distance of 1 m in its own direction then the work done is known as 1 joule.
The SI Unit of work is called joule which is denoted by the J.
I joule,= 1 newton × 1 metre
1 J = 1 Nm

Work is defined as scalar product of force and displacement.
The expression for the work done when a force is acting on an object in the direction of its displacement is as follows:
W = F . S
where,
F = magnitude of force
S = displacement
1 joule is defined as the the work done when a force of 1 N displaces an object at a distance of 1 m.
