☛ The numbers of the form p/q ,where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0 are called rational numbers.

Properties of rational number

  • A rational number remains the same when we divide or multiply both numerator and denominator with the same number.

  • The result of two rationals is always rational number when we multiply ,add or subtract them.

Rational numbers in decimal form :- Every rational number when expressed in decimal form is expressible either in terminating or in nonterminating repeating decimal form.

Important observation

To test whether a given rational number is a terminating or repeating decimal .

Let x be a rational number whose form p/q where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0.then,

  • x is terminating decimal only when q is of the form\sf\:({2}^{m}\times\:{5}^{n}) for some non negative integers m and n

  • x is a nonterminating repeating decimal,ifq≠\sf\:({2}^{m}\times\:{5}^{n})
