Define Adventitious root with suitable example.

Some roots grow above the soil, from the stem, are Maize as adventitious root. eg. Maize, sugarcane and sorghum have two types of roots, adventitious roots above the soil.

Adventitious root is defined as the root that appears from any point of the plant other than the radicle or the source axis.


These adventitious roots do not need the soil as they will grow on the natural sunlight and moist conditions.


When the adventitious plant is pulled up from the soil, it has the capacity to grow the new roots, no matter wherever it is placed.  

The best example for adventitious plants is Oak trees.
