the tendency of an atom in a molecule to attract the shared pair of electrons towards itself is called electronegativity.
electronegativity is a dimensionless property. since the nuclear charge increases due to an increase in atomic number and electronegativity increases from left to right in a period and in a group electronegativity decreases down a group. generally metals Show Low electronegativity as compared to nonmetals and metals are electropositive and nonmetals are electronegative . Electronegativity is measured on several scales.the most widely used is the Linus pauling scale .fluorine has the highest electronegativity [4.0) and caesium has lowest (0.7)

Hey,

Am explaining electronegativity in most simple words

Its nothing but ability of an atom to attract shared pair of electrons towards itself (you knw, its very difficult to remove an electron from highly electronegative element)

On going down the grp, it decreases
And along the period it increases

Actually it is a relative quantity and it have no units.

Flourine is the highest electronegative element in the periodic table and Cs is the lowest

Glad to help you
