Capacities of the lungs or respiratory volumes are approximately as follows :-

  • » Tidal Volume : Air breathed in and out in a normal quiet breathing = 500ml.

  • » Dead Air Space : The amount of tidal air left in respiratory passage and is non diffusible = 150ml.

  • » Alveolar Air : The tidal air contained in air asc = 350ml.

  • » Inspiratory Reserve Volume : Air that can be forcibly over and above tidal air = 300ml.

  • » Expiatory Reserve Volume : Air that can be forcibly expelled out by maximum inspiration and expiration ( supplemental air ) = 1000ml.

  • » Vital Capacity : The volume of air that can be taken in and expelled out by maximum inspiration and expiration = 4500ml.

  • » Residual Volume : Some air is always left in the lungs after forceful expiration = 1500ml.

  • » Total Lung Capacity : Maximum air which can at anytime be held in two lungs = 6000ml.
