Blood pressure is the measure of the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels.
During the initiation of the cardiac cycle, as the ventricles are filled with blood the pressure is minimum in the arteries. This minimum pressure is called as diastolic pressure. Near the end of the cardiac cycle , when the ventricles start to contract the pressure in the arteries is maximum. This maximum pressure is called as systolic pressure.
