A carbohydrate is a bio-molecule that contains atoms of carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O).

The usual hydrogen–oxygen atom ratio in a carbohydrate is 2:1 (as in water). The empirical formula is Cm(H2O)n (here m can be different from n).

This formula is true for monosaccharides. But you will also find exceptions like, deoxyribose,

it is a sugar component of DNA, and has empirical formula C5H10O4.

Carbohydrates are theoretically the hydrates of carbon. It will be accurate to view them as aldoses and ketoses.
