1.Placement of its carbonyl group- the monosacchrides belong to two carbonyl groups. They are Aldose and Ketose. When a group is an aldehyde and attaches to C-1 then it becomes an aldose. Whereas, when a carbonyl group is a ketone and attaches to C-2 then it becomes a ketose. Glucose is the example of aldose and fructose of ketose.
2.Number of carbon atoms- Monosaccharides is also classified according to the number of atoms. Three carbon atoms are called trioses, four are called tetroses, five are called pentoses, six are hexoses etc. When the two systems of classification combine they form for example, glucose is an aldohexose (a six-carbon aldehyde).
3.Isomerism- A chiral carbon is an asymmetric carbon that is associated with four different groups of molecules. The isomers rise in the same compound if there is a presence of chiral carbon within. Isomers are molecules that have same molecular formula but differ in the structural formula.
